Protecting Yourself After a Sale

If you have sold a vehicle, one of the most important things you can do is submit a Notice of Transfer of Ownership of A Vehicle; Form 25-01 can be found in the downloadable forms section. While it is the responsibility of the buyer to apply for a title after purchasing your vehicle, they may not do this. You may end up receiving registration renewal notices, and other correspondence that no longer applies to you. The buyer has up to 30 days to file for a title, you can immediately file the Notice of Transfer of Ownership of A Vehicle, giving you a little more peace of mind in the event that the buyer fails to title the vehicle.

To be acceptable for filing, the Notice of Transfer must include the following information:

  • V.I.N. of the vehicle or License plate number
  • Full name and address of transferor (seller)
  • Full name and address of transferee (buyer)
  • Date of ownership assignment
  • Signature of the transferor

If name(s) has changed - The registration does not match the signature on the Transfer of Ownership, document(s) must be submitted. IE: Marriage License, Divorce Decree, Legal Document for name change signed by a judge, Etc.

Notices lacking any of the above information should not be filed.
